Wait a minute... maybe that title "I AM Petit" wasn't such a good idea.
For all of the Indy fans who are starting to suffer from withdrawal, there is good news. Aside from the upcoming Surfer's Paradise race, you will also want to catch the ALMS "Petit Le Mans" race on October 4th at Road Atlanta. It is a ten hour race full of crazy things like cars with fenders, guys jumping out of cars, super sneaky silent cars, and some kind of weird engine-turning-off-thing during pit stops.
But don't let all of that scare you away. Here are some reasons why you will want to tune in:
- Kyle Busch, Ming the Merciless, and Ralph Macchio created this year's theme song.
- Indycar Drivers are all up in this thing. Dixon will be driving for De Ferran, Marco and TK for AGR, and, as recently announced, Helio and Briscoe for Penske.
- The full driver line-up hasn't been announced yet, but there will be some past open wheel guys driving like Gil De Ferran, Scott Sharp, and Simon Pagenaud. Now add some big names in sports car racing like Allan McNish, Clint Field, and Mika Salo among many others (OK Void.. yes.. those are the only names I know.. and I had to look them up to spell them correctly).
- They will be raising money for people suffering from "Living In Canada-itus". (Oh come on... it was a joke...)
- I am not going into detail on the classes in ALMS but it can be very cool to watch. Read about it on the ALMS web site (download the ALMS FAQ .pdf). In most ALMS races the diesel powered LMP1 class Audis are the fastest cars on the track. But the lower class LMP2 cars have been able to capitalize on a few of the LMP1 weaknesses (read: weight) and frequently win the race overall. One of the teams that has pulled it off a few times is Penske, and he is running 3 cars this year. Also, Audi's European nemesis, Peugeot, is fielding a pair of wickedly fast diesel powered cars.
- If you only enjoy ovals you are in luck. Road Atlanta Super Speedway is actually an "Oval" track. In the past few years "Weepers" have eroded the perfectly round course, and now there are a few "natural" bends that drivers will need to maneuver around.
Do It! Don't let the "Man" convince you that sports car racing is not "Polite" or "Good For Your Teeth". I tell you... I watched it, and it improved my ability to count things, helped me get a job as a "Online Forum Moderator", and protected me from level 4 paralyzing spells.
UPDATE!
It appears that Dario Franchitti will also be driving for HighCroft racing along with Scott Sharp and David Brabham.

Clint Field is most definitely NOT a famous sports car driver. Nice write up otherwise.
lol
Two things:
1) I assume that since you're pimipng Petit two weeks in advance that you might not be watching this weekend's GrandAm 1000k finale?
2) If the theme song really were "I am Petit", shouldn't AGR be employing one of their other IndyCar drivers as well? I may or may not be referring to Hideki Mutoh...
Not only will I be watching... but I'll be watching from the pitlane hopefully!! Weeeeee! Anything to extend the racing season so the off season isn't so painful!
Well, I can't say that I am a huge fan of GrandAm. It seems very Nascar-ish to me.. all of the "sports cars" look the same.. and they race on some really crappy tracks. But that's just me. I know Void might be watching it.. he loves GrandAm.
Our legal department has informed me that I am not allowed to comment on your second item. The official response I am supposed to give is:
- SGN Legal Corporate Memo -
Short people are at an extreme disadvantage both physically and mentally. SGN strongly advocates the removal and denial of driving privileges for anyone under the height of 5'9. We respectfully decline to comment any further on the grounds that we hate short people in both literal and metaphorical context.
Meesh, that's awesome. Make sure you keep us posted on whats going on. While your down there convince someone to get PT a ride...
Penske is running 3 cars at Petit? Wow.
I have it on good authority that nobody from an English-speaking country has every pronounced 'Peugeot' correctly. Americans say 'Poo-joh', Brits say 'Perr-joh', and the French somehow mangle their throats in strange ways to get the right sound. I tried it once and almost swallowed my tongue.
I might listen to it online via Radio Le Mans purely to hear John Hindhaugh's enthusiasm.
Yup, he is running 3. Although Void suspects this is his last year. And it's probably AGR's last year also. Pretty lame.. not sure why they want to leave now that there is some competition.
Even though the race is here in the US, our favorite "hardly-any-racing-at-all" channel "Speed" is only broadcasting portions of it live. I think they have an online service where you can watch the entire thing.
Since it goes on until gone 2am I'm not sure I'll follow the whole thing.
I have done that before via RadioLeMans.com and ALMS live timing... and I tell you with Pugs vs Audis it is tempting..
I'm sure MotorsTV over here will be covering the race in some fashion - but I don't get that. On the other hand, there is the miracle of torrents...
